Amazing Lace: Elie Saab SS/10 COUTURE

Elie Saab stuck to his forte this season and did again what he truly does best and this time there was no fussyness on the hair, make-up and jewellery – it was all about Girl and Dress. We saw magnificent floor-length gowns sweeping down the runway in intricate lace on light gorgeous fabrics and shades. The detailing was impeccable and added a wow factor to the stunning evening dresses. Embellishments ranged from crystals, sequins, embroideries and delicate ruffles layered on the gorgeous lace – It was a soft but very romantic and elegant collection and fell perfectly in sync with Spring/Summer’s current rhythm.

His show of cocktail dresses after evening dresses presented a range of styles in a palette of pale, wash-out colours from powder pink, yellow, peach and beige to ivory, olive-green, lavender and baby blue. We absolutely adored the petal-embroidered over-piece with a little train following closely behind and the short cocktail dresses with the boleros were simply divine. Also on our lust list were the draped, slit bustier dresses showing a flash of lace and the multi-coloured crinolined strapless ball gown was like a gentle breeze.

With lace strongly prevailing on through 2010, we just couldn’t help but share our best picks with you – and if you are off to a fancy ball, black-tie event or classy soiree sometime soon, take your pointers and inspiration from Elie Saab and know you can never go wrong. Aim for nothing but perfection and go after that Superstar effect.

Colour Blocking: ALEXIS MABILLE SS10 Couture

Two halves don’t always make a perfect whole but in the case of Alexis Mabille’s SS/10 Collection, it seems to have worked pretty well. His show kicked-off with the first model walking down the runway in a half black and half pink suit accompanied by hair and shoes styled in the same format.

This bi-colour theme continued throughout most of the collection moving next into black and red, then grey, blue and yellow. Later-on we saw a short skirt and shirt look, tunic dress with the black along the sides and the grey running down the middle making it appear as though the girl was wearing a coat over her dress – his colour blocking technique for this particular piece and a few others gave an illusion of many pieces in one – it was truly fascinating.

Mabille’s favourite signature ‘the bow’ later-on featured in his black and grey combination and again scattered round the neckline of a svelte little black cocktail dress in daffodil yellow. The collection displayed other graphic shapes in the form of cut-outs and a mix of colour blocks and then advancing into more red carpet-ready gowns towards the last quarter of the show.

Mabille’s evening wear was discrete but sophisticated and dazzling in an almost effortless and laid-back way. Best were a classic, long-sleeved black sweater with a spruce Peter Pan collar, belted and adorned with crystals creating a dramatic effect when paired with the black silk faille trained skirt, we also loved the long black sequinned evening dress with white sheer sleeves and collar and the black ball gown with contrasting bows nicely wrapped as sashes around the hips.

Pure romance: Chanel Couture SS/10

Lagerfeld is well known for his love and frequent use of blacks and whites in his collections, particularly black – but this season he seems to have turned a new corner and we see it in his Spring/Summer 2010 Couture collection.

With not a single black evening dress in sight on Chanel’s SS/10 Couture runway, we took a strong vibe from the King of fashion himself that colour is the way to go for next season and we’re not just taking beautiful and bold bright but shades that make your mouth water because they make you think of sherbet, candy and cake frosting.

Chanel’s Spring/Summer runway featured evening dresses in  acid yellow, candy-pink, fluorescent lime hues, champagne and cream; and those are the one’s that we will be keeping an eye out for and clashing or coordinating with next season. The collection named ‘Neon Baroque’ presented some highly impeccable work of craftsmanship and we love the re-vamped tailored pieces and the drift from the classic Chanel but still maintaining a reference to the brands signature.

It was a mix of romanticism meets space-age and the detailing against the palette looked magnificent. Silver thread ran through the seems of the collection pieces like hot mercury and thousands of handmade silk roses cascaded as a cape over a silver-jewelled shift. The Chanel girl looked super-sweet in this collection but also young, sophisticated and elegant. A young girl with nothing but class and great taste in clothing. Lagerfeld really hit all the right notes with this one and we absolutely can’t wait to strip-off winter’s dark and glummy shades in exchange for dresses in pretty pastels and powdery shades.

As for the grand finale, a groom in a metallic silver suit steps out to walk his bride down the runway in a silk ball gown with a jewelled bodice and sleeves followed by metres and metres of gorgeous tulle caressed into ruffled clouds forming the train.
