BCBG Maz Azria: AW10

This season, practicallity was at the heart of BCBG’s collection and unlike previous Azria collections, it was more groundered and less fantasitical than before. It had endless variations of simple, wearable chic pieces and there were alot of geometric lines, colour bloking and layering in the techiques that formed the basis of the collection.

The colour palette was not too complex with a blend of hard-neutrals and featured the occasional sequinne, tulle and sheer pleat here and there. Each look was light and moved with the slightest breeze and we particularly loved the asymmetrical-hemmed silk dresses and long sleeved cape dresses. All-in-all, it was a clean, sophistcated and modern collection that had a lot to choose from and we’d buy every piece from the collection if we had to.

Jason Wu: AW10

For Fall 2010, Jason Wu showcased an amazing collection that had a menswear inspired theme running across it. It wasn’t the usual princess dresses that we have grown acustomed to seeing at his shows and he clearly was trying to demonstrate that he has a lot more to offer the industry with this collection which had a bit of everything.

Aside from the menswear inspired outerwear looks which were mainly centred and inspired by the late photographer Irving Penn, we were also very drown to the dresses. Penn was also Wu’s muse this season and his photograph’s were used as an influence on some of Wu’s dresses for the collection; this was quite evident in the black and white bubble dress with a cigarette-burn print that appeared as polka dots from a distance. The men’s oversized blazer over a dress was also a nice touch and it highlighted the thought process that had gone into the making of this collection.

A few of our favourite dresses were the off-the-shoulder with pheasant feathers in-between the layers of tulle, the satin dresses with the gold leafing and a plume-print silk tulle strapless number. We would have prefered a less colourful runway though because we felt it clashed with Wu’s palette but overall it was a job well done for a collection that had so many wearable pieces.

Amazing Lace: Elie Saab SS/10 COUTURE

Elie Saab stuck to his forte this season and did again what he truly does best and this time there was no fussyness on the hair, make-up and jewellery – it was all about Girl and Dress. We saw magnificent floor-length gowns sweeping down the runway in intricate lace on light gorgeous fabrics and shades. The detailing was impeccable and added a wow factor to the stunning evening dresses. Embellishments ranged from crystals, sequins, embroideries and delicate ruffles layered on the gorgeous lace – It was a soft but very romantic and elegant collection and fell perfectly in sync with Spring/Summer’s current rhythm.

His show of cocktail dresses after evening dresses presented a range of styles in a palette of pale, wash-out colours from powder pink, yellow, peach and beige to ivory, olive-green, lavender and baby blue. We absolutely adored the petal-embroidered over-piece with a little train following closely behind and the short cocktail dresses with the boleros were simply divine. Also on our lust list were the draped, slit bustier dresses showing a flash of lace and the multi-coloured crinolined strapless ball gown was like a gentle breeze.

With lace strongly prevailing on through 2010, we just couldn’t help but share our best picks with you – and if you are off to a fancy ball, black-tie event or classy soiree sometime soon, take your pointers and inspiration from Elie Saab and know you can never go wrong. Aim for nothing but perfection and go after that Superstar effect.
