The Hampton Court Flower Show

This year the Girl Meets Dress team went to The Hampton Court Flower Show, it was an exciting event for families and plant lovers with exotic garden displays, creative gardens of course a few floral dresses!

One of the most intriguing parts of the show was the Butterfly Dome. Visitors could step into a lush paradise garden simply by walking into the Butterfly Dome, filled with exotic butterflies from South America and Indonesia. We took a wander among the brightly coloured creatures as they flew around – definitely a brilliant photo opportunity! The dome was filled with lush tropical planting and for an even more interactive experience there were butterfly feeding stations placed among the plants – it didn’t feel like Surrey at all. Definitely a good learning experience with the children.

There was also the Rose Garden, where there it hosted the Festival of Roses. We talked to specialists and found which rose was best suited for us individually, this information has helped the team a lot, as now we know which scents suit us best, so next time we’re choosing our new perfume, we’ll be better informed.

Even if roses aren’t your ‘thing’, it was impossible to leave the marquee without being impressed by the incredible range of roses available to gardeners. If you’re worried that roses are difficult, or need a lot of time to look after, we talked to the growers – we discovered that many new varieties are easier to grow than ever before as they’ve been selected for ‘user-friendly’ traits like disease resistance and dropping their petals cleanly when they’ve finished flowering. So take a fresh look at roses today!

Then there was the RHS Kitchen Garden. Award-winning garden designer, Juliet Sargeant, who won Gold at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show last year, created an entirely edible garden packed with simple and creative growing ideas and inspiration for visitors and viewers to take home to their own gardens and communities.

The garden demonstrated simple and innovative growing techniques and recipe ideas for small spaces aimed at gardeners of all ages and abilities. At the same time, popular TV duo, The Hairy Bikers, presented a live cookery programme using ingredients from the garden every day of the show.

We highly recommend going to next year’s show, as it’s not just a fun day out with the family and plant enthusiasts, but also an exciting educational experience to know more about plants, for those who want to improve their gardens or want to know more about nature.
