The week in dresses

By Carla Challis

The shade: Electric Blue
When the Duchess of Cambridge and Blake Lively are both spotted wearing the same shade of blue, you know it’s a colour you’ve got to get on board with. Flattering to every skin tone under the sun, it’s an edgier alternative to tangerine or neon pink and much more wearable – heck, you can even break the cardinal sin of no black and blue with this nifty shade. For a real moment, team with complimentary dove grey or sherbet peach.

The shape: Two for one
It’s not quite your regular BOGOF deal you’ll find in your local supermarket, but it’s close. The smartest girls are using their sartorial style to get two for the price of one with a skirt and top combi. If, like Marion Cottilard you like the look of a pencil skirt and top, this is a much easier way to achieve it as you benefit from the clean lines a dress provides whilst creating the illusion of separate pieces. Or make like Fan Bing Bing and choose an overlay dress for a cool, matching look.

The show: Anne Hathaway
This girl doesn’t let a little thing like a necessary pixie crop (which she apparently cried over when being cut) stop her from giving good dress. On the promo trail for her new movie The Dark Knight, Anne Hathaway has chosen a mix of girly yet contemporary gowns, from the Grecian inspired plunging Prabal Gurung to the stunning sixties shimmer Gucci. Our favourite though, by far, is the cute and cool gingham Stella McCartney cut-out – it complements her crop to the bone.

The week in dresses: Hunger Games special

If you haven’t heard of the Hunger Games (aka the new Twilight), where have you been?! The movie adaptation of the much-hyped book, starring Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth and Elizabeth Banks, has been premiereing all over the world, giving its stars the chance to show off their fashion finery. But who worked the black and red carpet best?

A gold star has to go to Jennifer Lawrence, who showcased her style credentials in three stunning dresses. In LA, a futuristic Prabal Gurung gold lame gown ensured she outshone her co-stars, keeping it daring with a thigh high split and cut-out details. London saw Jennifer go one step further with a handmade, one of a kind Ralph Lauren crocodile skin halter-neck – it took over 800 hours to to hand bead the frock! She kept things understatedly chic in Paris with a fierce, form-fitting zip Tom Ford frock – the sexy was brought back, literally, with a completely open back. Ladies and gentleman, Jennifer Lawrence has arrived.

Zesty and packing a punch, Elizabeth Banks seemed to take her colour palette straight from the fruit bowl! She zinged in orange beaded Versace at the LA premiere – not sure about the First Lady style hair though, we think an edgier ‘do would’ve worked wonders. London was treated to a citrus yellow Bill Blass backless gown topped off with Jimmy Choos, naturally whilst in Paris, an embellished Marc Jacobs berry-toned frock wowed the crowds.

But who’s style do you like best?
