What Best to Wear to the Grand National

It’s that time of year again. Horse racing fans from across the globe will be flocking to Aintree in April to witness the greatest flat race in the world at the Grand National.

History has been written about the legendary runners and riders who have triumphed in the Grand National, each of them demonstrating that thrilling combination of human endeavour and equine fortitude. From the legendary triple-winning success of Red Rum, to our present day successors, there is always a story to be told. Two of jump racing’s high-profile amateur jockeys are set to miss this year’s Grand National because of bans picked up in recent days. Sam Waley-Cohen and Nina Carberry have both been given week-long bans which, contrary to initial reports, will mean that both are prevented from taking part in the famous Aintree race, in which both have fared well while falling short of actual victory.

Once again the world will stop in its tracks, as 600 million people watch live on television. 40 horses and jockeys will line up to race across the famous fences including Becher’s Brook, Canal Turn, Valentine’s and The Chair.

Ladies Day brings a touch of elegance to The Crabbie’s Grand National Festival, providing an opportunity for racegoers to compete in the style stakes alongside top class racing action on the world famous Aintree Racecourse stage.

Many of you start looking at dresses to hire weeks and months ahead of the event – and if you’re lucky enough to be heading to the Grand National 2016, we take a look at what best to wear to the races.

Grand National Dress Code

What to wear to the Grand National

Although there is no official dress code, smart is preferable and is often adopted. Aintree is a spectacle of colour for all three days of the festival, with many using their trip as an opportunity to showcase their favourite raceday outfits. Hats are optional too, but are frequently worn. Sports clothes and fancy dresses are not permitted for the Grand National meeting.

In 2016 Grand National Ladies Day women are urged to dress more conservatively to make the race more ‘aspirational’

For her

Florals, graphic prints, lace and coral shades were some of the big trends from the spring/summer catwalks which will work well at the races.

Ladylike lace pieces are likely to prove popular with attendees, as are the edgy florals and three quarter length skirts.

In terms of footwear, women should be cautious about choosing skyscraper heels which may sink into the grass. Luckily flat shoes are some of the most stylish around this summer, or for those who prefer a bit of height, wedges from LK Bennett or Stuart Weitzman are the perfect compromise.

Grand National Hats

Although optional, hats and fascinators are the order of the day and attendees tend to embrace the opportunity to be a bit creative. Remember to choose something which works well with your face shape and outfit. If you’re opting for structured tailoring a small hat will look lost, while a busy printed dress will work well with simpler headwear.

What to Wear for a Day at the Races

Whilst racing festival season may be over, many race tracks up and down the country continue to host fantastic races and events.  Here we look at what to wear for the races, race course dress codes and how to still look stylish at the races as the winter months draw in.

Hiring a dress for the races proved an ever popular option this year as the need to impress in a designer piece and to avoid being seen in the same dress as another race goer heightened, as did hemlines.  Designer dress hire assured our race going ladies had all the class and more cash to put on the horses. Here we look to what to wear for the races as we head into autumn and winter.

Monochrome is the colour scheme to be seen in this A/W13 . Black and white palettes are great for the races as their simplicity means they are almost automatically classy and chic. The three pieces above show just how versatile monochrome can be.

From the Chantilly Lace Alice and Olivia number to the Mackynzie 3D  Dress to this simple but striking D&G piece, they all score major fashion points without disturbing the dress code. Monochrome can also be dressed up by adding the correct accessories – every race goer worth her salt knows an extravagant hat is a must.

If you’re looking to hire a dress for the races in the upcoming colder months then one way of keeping warm and stylish is to hire a designer dress with sleeves. Sleeves are great in two ways as they not also tick further modesty boxes and therefore crack race course dress codes. They’re also amazingly stylish. The three pieces above and perfect to wear for a day at the races and even as the autumn months draw in you’ll still be comfortable. After all no good bets are going to be made if you’re too busy desperately trying to conserve heat.

If you stick to the rules, keep it simple and nail your accessories, then race course dressing can be easy and stylish. Why not check out our blog for several posts on how to dress for the races.
