London Summer Edition Blog 1

The Refinery St Andrew Square brings a touch of glamour to the city´s drinking and dining scene with a stunning setting that is sure to delight locals and visitors alike.

Spread across two beautifully designed floors – visible through ground to ceiling glass windows – and separated by a show-stopping spiral staircase, guests will be greeted by a beautiful bar and casual dining area, with a statement back bar illuminating the various bottles of wine and spirits available. Towards the rear is an intimate restaurant and open-plan kitchen with sit-at counter dining, bringing all of the action of the grill to diners who want a front row seat. Curiosity will almost certainly lead guests up the staircase to the restaurant’s library lounge where they’ll be able to sink into comfortable armchairs draped in fur. There will also be an alfresco terrace, complete with blankets and hot water bottles for year-round revelry. The Refinery St Andrew Square will be keeping cocktails above the standards of even the most demanding connoisseurs, serving up seasonally inspired concoctions influenced by the latest global trends.

Dining Out: Restaurant Mark Greenway

London Summer Edition Blog 2

A talented chef and a showman – he’s been on the telly – Greenaway brings both professionalism and fun to fine dining. He burst on the Edinburgh scene in 2011 at Picardy Place then moved his restaurant to North Castle Street in 2013. Here the interior colour scheme is predominantly pale blue and the furniture modern, but it somehow fits in a building that’s very much part of the Georgian New Town. Given the existence of the market menu, covering lunch and pre-theatre, eating here need not break the bank. Come the evening, come the à la carte of course – or an eight course tasting menu should you prefer.

The theatrical aspect of Greenaway’s craft can kick in early – a salmon amuse bouche housed in a ceramic egg and served in an egg carton for instance. A signature starter is crab cannelloni with smoked cauliflower custard, lemon pearls, baby coriander, beetroot mayo – and herbed butter playing a surprise role. The long-running signature main is 11-hour, slow-roast belly pork, a dish that has been tweaked over the years but it might come with pork cheek, blackened fillet, sweetcorn and toffee apple jus. A typical dessert could be white chocolate sponge with blueberry gel, lemon curd, ice cream and poppy seed tuille.

Performances to Remember: The King’s Theatre

London Summer Edition Blog 3

One of Britain’s most opulent touring venues, the King’s Theatre has recently undergone a major refurbishment which has seen big improvements for the beloved Edinburgh venue, not least of which is the brand new seating which affords much more legroom and an altogether more comfortable audience experience.

The King’s was built in 1905 by Edinburgh builder, William Stewart Cruikshank with the millionaire philanthropist Andrew Carnegie laying the foundation stone. The doors opened the following year with a performance of Cinderella and the theatre soon became of national importance to the whole of the UK. With a long tradition of Variety and pantomime, stars such as Stanley Baxter, Rikki Fulton and Jimmy Logan have all trod the boards over the years.

Now the King’s is Edinburgh’s home of West End drama and quality touring theatre, ensuring local audiences have the chance to see some of the UK’s most prolific actors and best touring productions on home turf. Over the years the King’s has played host to some of the world’s biggest stars of screen and stage, including Sir Laurence Olivier, Maria Callas, Lesley Neilsen, Sir Patrick Stewart, Sir Ian McKellan, Penelope Keith, Simon Callow – and Sir Sean Connery even worked backstage here!

We have so many  evening dresses for hire in Edinburgh so you’re spoilt for choice – from our Red Painted Lady by Beulah to hire in London to our Glamorous Jumpsuit.

Performances to Remember: The Royal Opera House

London Summer Edition Blog 3

In 1871, our opening year, They staged just 36 shows. Now they host almost 400 events in the auditorium and many hundreds more around the Royal Albert Hall every year.

The must go events during the summer are the annual BBC Proms which run from 14 July – 9 September 2017 for 8 weeks of concerts, talks, workshops, family events and more, ending with the famous Last Night of the Proms at London’s Royal Albert Hall.

The scope of the Proms has increased enormously since 1895, however Henry Wood’s concept for the season remains largely unaltered: to present the widest possible range of music, performed to the highest standards, to large audiences. And promenading in the Royal Albert Hall’s arena continues to be a central feature, lending the Proms its unique, informal atmosphere. The Proms celebrated its 123rd season in 2017 yet still remains true to its original aim: to present the widest range of music, performed to the highest standards, to large audiences.

What’s going on in London?

Hitting the Town: Embargo’s

London Blog 1Embargo Republica brings a slice of Cuban cool to King’s Road. Located at a prized location on Chelsea’s King’s Road, you’ll enter through a cigar shop to discover a smooth and stylish space featuring exposed brickwork, vintage furnishings and a spacious rooftop terrace.

The venue offers an exhilarating mish-mash of music, with live bands and DJs gracing the stage every week. These guys also consider luscious cocktails as something of a speciality, with no less than 20 different bottles of rum vying for position on the shelves. The choice of premium champers on offer confirms that we are definitely in Chelsea, and Embargo Republica’s blend of rhythm, colour, spirit and style ensures that Cuban values are never far from the surface.

Dining Out: Zuma

london blog 2Out of simplicity can come excellence, and the food at Zuma is a case in point. The venue may be swish (with well-to-do patrons propping up the amply stocked cedar bar), the fixtures and fittings expensive, but when it comes to the food, much of the wow factor is down to high-class ingredients that haven’t been messed around with too much. Own-made silken tofu, presented in a cedar saké cup, was rich, creamy and light.

The barley miso, freshly grated wasabi and other accompaniments allowed the tofu to shine. A more indulgent dish of spicy miso with lobster also had a clarity of flavour, with the sweet shellfish the star. An ample house special of deep-fried lemon sole was served with a fresh, tangy ponzu sauce and cleverly presented in a bowl made of the curved and deep-fried skeleton of the fish. The waiting staff couldn’t  be nicer, and even the chefs behind the imposing robata grill seemed to be having a good time. Be sure to give the saké list a proper look too: there are more than 40 to choose from.

Performances to Remember: The Royal Opera House

London Blog 3

The Royal Opera House aims to enrich people’s lives through opera and ballet. Home to two of the world’s great artistic companies – The Royal Opera and The Royal Ballet, performing with the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House – we seek to be always accessible and engaging, to develop audiences across the UK and to break new ground in the presentation of lyric theatre.

The Royal Opera, under the direction of Antonio Pappano, is one of the world’s leading opera companies. It is renowned both for its outstanding performances of traditional opera and for commissioning new works by today’s leading opera composers, such as Harrison Birtwistle, Mark-Anthony Turnage and Thomas Adès. Some of the world’s most famous singers have performed with the Company, including Joyce DiDonato, Plácido Domingo, Renée Fleming, Juan Diego Flórez, Angela Gheorghiu, Jonas Kaufmann, Anna Netrebko and Bryn Terfel, as well as the late Luciano Pavarotti and Joan Sutherland.

The Royal Ballet is one of the great ballet companies of the world. Under the leadership of Director Kevin O’Hare, grand balletic tradition and an illustrious heritage are united with innovation, daring and exceptional standards of artistry, creativity and stagecraft to produce supreme theatre. It is a beacon in the cultural life of Britain and a driving force behind the development of ballet as an artform. The Company’s commitment to enriching people’s lives through ballet is reflected in the deep relationships it forges through digital and learning platforms and international touring.
