The week in dresses: Hunger Games special

If you haven’t heard of the Hunger Games (aka the new Twilight), where have you been?! The movie adaptation of the much-hyped book, starring Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth and Elizabeth Banks, has been premiereing all over the world, giving its stars the chance to show off their fashion finery. But who worked the black and red carpet best?

A gold star has to go to Jennifer Lawrence, who showcased her style credentials in three stunning dresses. In LA, a futuristic Prabal Gurung gold lame gown ensured she outshone her co-stars, keeping it daring with a thigh high split and cut-out details. London saw Jennifer go one step further with a handmade, one of a kind Ralph Lauren crocodile skin halter-neck – it took over 800 hours to to hand bead the frock! She kept things understatedly chic in Paris with a fierce, form-fitting zip Tom Ford frock – the sexy was brought back, literally, with a completely open back. Ladies and gentleman, Jennifer Lawrence has arrived.

Zesty and packing a punch, Elizabeth Banks seemed to take her colour palette straight from the fruit bowl! She zinged in orange beaded Versace at the LA premiere – not sure about the First Lady style hair though, we think an edgier ‘do would’ve worked wonders. London was treated to a citrus yellow Bill Blass backless gown topped off with Jimmy Choos, naturally whilst in Paris, an embellished Marc Jacobs berry-toned frock wowed the crowds.

But who’s style do you like best?

The week in dresses

The trend
: On Show
The details: Mid-driff flashing made a comeback last year with crop tops aplenty, but it’s been taken up a level to red carpet status with cut-out dresses, lace peep holes and subtle slashes at the waist. Perhaps the most dramatic was Sarah Jessica Parker’s 2005 Louis Vuitton lace peplum at Paris Fashion Week, a Carrie-esque dress if ever we saw one; over at the Fun and Fearless Cosmopolitan party, Dakota Fanning rocked her icy silver Miu Miu, showing just a slice of mid-driff; and Stacey Kiebler has it, so she flaunted it in a deep teal dress.

The trend: LBD
The details: Karlie Kloss, Poppy Delevigne and Cameron Diaz all took to their trusty LBD’s this week, with Karlie’s cut-out and Poppy’s thigh-slit maxi making their mark at the Marc Jacobs Exhibition in Paris and Cameron Diaz played it safe with figure hugging Fendi at a Tag Hueur Promotion Event.

The trend: Polished prom
The details: Fun, flirty and carefree, we can’t seem to shake our love affair with full skirts – perhaps its an ode to our childhood or that the shape is universally flattering? Both Mena Suvari‘s Alice + Olivia and Emily Blunt‘s Naeem Khan monochrome dresses had a touch of the traditional about it but it’s Fan Bing Bing‘s intricately worked Louis Vuitton – complete with matching head scarf – that would win her the Prom Queen tiara.

The Perfect Birthday Dress-Ask Anna

“My birthday is coming up and I am having a party where both family and friends will be attending.  I’ll be turning 18 so will need a dress that will wow my friends but won’t shock my family.  I am on a budget so please only suggest dresses under £100.â€

For such a special occasion such as your birthday we can understand your desire to have a show-stopping dress yet one that won’t make family members (particularly grandparents) want to cover you up in a coat as soon as you arrive!  A special dress that will stand out for all the right reasons is what you’ll need to create the desired look that will impress all of your attendees, whatever their age…

Our Marc Jacobs Rainbow Paillette dress is the ultimate in glam and was even worn by Fergie at the Teen Choice awards.  On its own, the black bustier may be a little too ‘little’ for the grandparents however, with its sheer black tulle overlay and beautiful detailing consisting of horizontal rainbow sequinned stripes it’s the perfect party dress.  Team with a colourful chunky necklace and sky-high heels as illustrated below.

Another great choice is our Winona Dress by Amee Lou.  In gorgeous plum, this asymmetric frock screams luxury couture with its layered taffeta-chiffon.  Accessorize with long earrings and a metallic clutch and you’ll be head to toe glam!

Finally, our Alice and Olivia Salmon Sequinned Dress will ensure the limelight is all yours.  Particularly girly, make this ballerina-esque with your hair wrapped up into a bun and show-stopping silver platforms .
