Kate Middleton in a Designer Dress? ‘Fraid not!

‘Princess of the High-Street’.  That should be the Duchess’s real title.  It was expected upon joining the FIRM, Kate would go from high-street shopper, to designer clothes covetress.  How wrong we were.  It seems Kate’s ongoing high-street love affair is as strong as ever, even now that she has embarked upon royal married life.

Kate’s Non-Designer Dress Choice to Meet Fashion’s First Lady

We refer to Kate’s choice of outfit she wore to meet Barack and Michelle Obama yesterday, at a reception in Buckingham Palace.   While William and Barack were deep in discussion, Kate chatted animatedly to Michelle in, (cue: designer name,) err, wait a minute, a REISS dress!

You certainly have to admire the Duchess’s sang-froid in not opting to wear ‘designer’ when you consider that Mrs Obama is something of fashion icon- a true first lady of fashion; she arguably gets as much coverage as her husband thanks to the attention her outfit choices bring her.

Michelle Wears Tom Ford for the Banquet

We should add, that yesterday was no exception – Michelle wore an outgoing ensemble by California designer Barbara Tfank.  But for the first lady of fashion, it was only the beginning, with Michelle surpassing herself and her earlier outfit later that evening when she arrived at the photo-call in a criss-cross halterneck white floor-length gown by Tom Ford.  Teamed with white opera gloves, Michelle’s gown really stole the show.  (Queenie looked radiant as ever, we hasten to add.  Goes without saying really!)

The Duchess of Cambridge: A Style Icon in the Making

But back to Kate: we are growing fonder of the Duchess by the day! Long live the Princess of the High-Street! Or the High-Street’s Princess.  We’re not sure which one we prefer.  So, now that Reiss’ website has crashed due to the influx of orders placed for Kate’s Cream bandage-esque, capped shoulder number, just where is there to turn for something similar?

We have come up with the following solutions. And what’s more, they might well have cost more to start with than Kate’s but these designer numbers come with high-street price tags!

Kate really is missing a trick here; she would be a brilliant brand ambassador for GMD! (Get in touch Kate, if you’re listening).  On-line designer dress hire and the Duchess are simply a match made in heaven!  What’s more, we love the Duchess’s choice of a nude colour palette, so very now!  Which is why, we’ve chosen our favourite GMD designer dresses to hire, all in a lovely tone of nude a la Kate.  A style-icon in the making in our opinion!

What to Wear to the Races – Dresses for the Races

Getting an outfit for the races is a task which many women no doubt will be facing, what with important events on the racing calendar fast approaching, such as such as the QIPCO Guineas Festival, and of course, Royal Ascot. What to wear to the races is a question for which there is no correct answer.  Which makes finding dresses for the races no easy feat!

An Outfit for the Races – How to Look the Part

An outfit for the races, depending on the meeting, may not necessarily need to be that formal. However, it certainly pays to check the official information website of the race event for what to wear to the races as per the specified dress code.  Dresses for the races are always chic and given that a hat is almost a must, a dress is the icing on the cake to looking lovely come race day.   Of course, an outfit for the races doesn’t have to mean dress, but what with etiquette, formal tradition and exacting dress codes lodged heavily into the racing tradition, why not use the occasion as an excuse to pull out all the stops and embrace the debonair spirit of dressing for the races!

What to Wear to the Races – Our Dress Picks

We give you our top picks of what to wear to the races, so that wardrobe dilemmas for this tricky event type become a thing of the past.  Below are some of our favourite dresses for the races, available from our online designer dress hire boutique:

1. Look chic and sophisticated in this orange silk Fendi wrap trench dress with contrast black belt.  Hire: £109 (RRP: £730).  Accesorize with earrings Blaguette Pave Beanies available to buy: £90, or a statement cuff like this Alika Multi Cuff, £176, also by Blaguette.

2. This flirty, prom style pleated Rose dress by Stella McCartney will give a fabulous silhouette.  Hire: £299 (RRP £1,187).  Pair with these elegant Camilla earrings from Blaguette: £80.

3.  This watercourse textured silk sheath dress by Giambattista Valli with its exaggerated frill collar will ensure you turn heads on event day.  Hire: £189 (RRP: £1,400). Plump for pared down accesories such as these Kiss Me Kate Drop earrings, £85.

A Stunning Dress for a Dinner Date-Ask Anna

“I have a dinner date coming up next weekend with a guy I’ve only met once before. I want to wear something sexy, but also not too flashy. What would you suggest?”

My rule for first dates is that although you obviously want to dress to impress, it is also really important to feel comfortable. I am assuming that the restaurant he is taking you to is relatively fancy – if he’s planned his first date with you at his favourite kebab shop then you definitely do not need to dress up for this guy – there will be no date number two! Therefore, a nice mid-length dress would be ideal.

Here are my top choices:

JASMINE DI MILO – Ribbon Cold Shoulder Dress

This is a beautiful, one-shoulder dress. It is both sexy and sophisticated, and black is always a safe option. Wear with a clutch which matches your heels. Wear your hair up, so that there is as much neckline as possible visible.

HERVE LEGER – Green & Grey Dress

This dress is definitely the sexier option – with the figure-hugging cut and low-cut back, your date won’t be able to take his eyes off you! Wear with your favourite pair of black heels, with your hair down to dress the look down slightly.

FENDI – Fendi Wrap Dress

I think that this dress is the most relaxed option, so if that is a major priority for you, then this is your dress of choice! Wear with a pair of black ankle boots.

One last tip: Don’t Panic! Have a glass of vino before you go to quell those last minute butterflies (try stick to one though…). Enjoy yourself – you look stunning!
