Marchesa

The week in dresses

By Carla Challis

The Shade: Nude
Taking a break from the neons and candyfloss pastels, nude is the colour de la semaine. Far from it being an ethereal or bland tone (throw thoughts of the Duchess of Cambridge’s tights out of the window!), both Kylie and Kate Moss‘ chose nudes with black lace accents to edge their outfits up. But if you want to keep it simple, take a leaf out of Yao Chen‘s book, who’s Philosophy Alberta Ferretti perfectly complemented her stunning skin tone. A lesson in less is more.

Nude isn’t a dirty word with these stunning dresses for you to try

The shape: Nip + Fab
Playful and endearingly pretty, the look of Paris Couture Week was fitted and flared. The universally flattering shape was worn by the likes of Marion Cotillard, who opted for floral silk Dior Haute-Couture and Jennifer Lawrence who threw in a bright, oriental print Dior dress into the mix too; this looks set to be the style to sport next year with Dior spearheading the revolution. But as always Diane Kruger didn’t let her style crown slip for a moment in this ‘I’m cycling through the French Riviera’ cornflower blue Chanel Resort dress, a fine example of how to dress down a traditionally staid and stiff look – just add spiked flats and a beret!

Get waisted with these flirty frocks

The show: Katy Perry, ‘Part of Me’ Premiere
The former Mrs Russell Brand has been everywhere this week, from Sydney to LA to London to promote her new 3D movie, Part of Me. And she hasn’t disappointed on the red carpet either! Shying away from the gimmicky or gaudy gowns she has been known to be showcase, Katy went for three sophistiKATEd (geddit?) and spunky sartorial choices in Marchesa, Dolce & Gabbana and Versace. But it was London’s Marchesa ballerina-esque that got everyone talking, which she styled with Union Jack eyelashes. You can take the girl out of quirky town, but you can’t take the quirky out of the girl…

The Week in Dresses – 15th June 2012

By Carla Challis

The trend:
 Shoulder show-off
King Charles II would have loved the seemingly accidental, almost innocent off-the-shoulder trend, as though a dress would just fall off at the slip of a hem. Salvatore Ferragamo’s designs are poster pin-up for this trend, with Leighton Meester and Fan Bing Bing wearing his peasant inspired designs. Chloe Moretz structured MaxMara LBD is more eighties working girl, soften by ruffled lines and a girly alice band. Melanie Griffith would be proud…

Give other looks the slip and push these wide necked dresses off the shoulder…

From left: 3.1 Phillip Lim Ballerina Dress, Dina Bar-El Sophia, Roberto Cavalli Floral Print Jersey Dress

The trend: Sheer genius
Give the illusion of nude, Rubenesque flesh with this daring favourite of the A-list brigade. Naked they are not, the intricately designed lace or embroidery covers their modesty and gives a killer finish – just look at Malin Akerman‘s stunning gilded Marchesa dress. We love how Catherine Zeta Jones looks as though she’s been caught in a web of ivy whilst Sheryl Crow does demure in navy Marchesa.

Show a little skin with these lace and sheer creations…

The trend: Gothic Girls
Style’s savviest players are shunning neons and brights, pastels and candy hues for a much darker, devilish palette. Wine red, burgundy, plum and aubergine shades rocked the palest of skintones; from Florence Welch in ruffled Gucci to Lady Gaga in futuristic David Koma (with matching shoes, clutch and sunglasses, natch). But it’s Emma Stone‘s schoolgirl-esque Rochas puffball who gets the goth award for overall cuteness.

Show your dark side with these deliciously dark dresses…

The Week in Dresses: Ladies in Red Dresses Glam-Up the Red Carpet

Unsurprisingly, the show-stopping couture worn at the Emmy Awards, Los Angeles on Sunday night has made us fall in love with the colour red all over again.  With A-listers such as Glee’s Lea Michele in Marchesa, our very own Kate Winslet in Ellie Saab and Nina Dobrev in a jaw-dropping Donna Karan, they glamorized the red carpet in what appeared to be a modern take on old Hollywood glamour.  Mature, sophisticated and feminine were the adjectives that fell off our lips at GMD headquarters as we gasped and gaped at the array of dresses we couldn’t get enough of.  Naturally red wasn’t the only colour worn on the night. Black, champagne, silver and navy all showcased in a variety of styles however red, undisputedly, stole the show with more than eight ladies donning its various shades.

What They Wore to Cannes- Now You Can(nes)

From Stella McCartney to a Marchesa Ball Dress, Penelope is Paparazzi Perfect at Cannes

Last week, in its 64th edition, the Cannes Film Festival began. Which is news worth celebrating in our opinion, since this means actresses in divine dresses making red carpet parades a plenty.  Never a lady to disappoint when it comes to what she wears on that only-too-well known actor catwalk, Spanish seductress Penelope Cruz looked ravishing in her midnight blue Stella McCartney dress.  From the Stella McCartney A/W ’11 collection, the figure hugging dress with its flattering bodice, and below the knee cut looked fabulous on the actress, who posed for photographers at the Pirates of the Caribbean Premiere.

And just like  in her flawless Casadei satin stilettoes at photo-call number one, the doyenne of red-carpet dressing didn’t put a foot wrong come her second red-carpet appearance.  Opting for a floor-length jewel-encrusted lilac Marchesa ball dress, with fanned tulle detailing on the shoulders and from the knee that went into a train, there wasn’t a single paparazzi lens not pointed direction Penelope.  The latest Pirates of the Carribean movie star wasn’t the only red carpet regular to show up in Marchesa. Rachel McAdams appeared in a red organza silk tulle Marchesa ball dress with embroidery detail at the premiere of her latest film, Midnight in Paris. (Marchesa really ruled on the red carpet this year!)

A Calvin Klein Ball Dress for Diane Kruger

Another of our favourites for her red carpet ensemble (and not just because of her arm candy accessory-Joshua Jackson- we wish could accompany our dress on the red carpet!)  in a divine curve worshipping sequin backless Calvin Klein ball dress was Diane Kruger.

Rent a Marchesa Ball Dress, Calvin Klein, or Stella McCartney – with GMD now you Cannes!

These ladies really did show how Cannes is done, and we couldn’t agree more with their choice of designer evening dresses and ball gowns.   Here at GMD we currently love this Calvin Klein gown (right) – a dark blue strapless jersey number with leather accents.  If you want to step out in Calvin Klein why not rent this £1098 ball dress for just £179?

Or if like Pen and Rach, it’s Marchesa you’re after, take a look at the gorgeous pink tiered Marchesa ball dress (£950). Rent this stunner of a turquoise Marchesa ball dress for a summer do for just £159.  Who said you couldn’t do Cannes glam when not in Cannes? From London to Ibiza, straight to LA- New York, Marchesa to Calvin Klein! Sorry, that’s us getting distracted by J-Lo on the radio.  You might not be going to Cannes but you ‘cannes’ rent a Marchesa ball dress.  View our full ball dress selection .
