Best of British

Last night, Britain heralded the best of British fashion with the British Fashion Awards 2010. In attendance, amongst others, were designer of the moment Holly Fulton, Daphne Guiness, shoe queen Charlotte Dellal of Charlotte Olympia, and obligatory fashionable PM’s wife, in the form of Sarah Cameron. The event, held at the Savoy Hotel, heralded such British fashion icons as Nicholas Kirkwood (Best Accessory Designer), GMD favourite Alexa Chung (Best British Style) and Lara Stone (Best Model), while also paying tribute to Alexander McQueen, after his untimely death earlier this year, with an Outstanding Achievement award.

Perhaps it is testament to the eclecticism of true British style that on the Red Carpet, current trends and Fashion Week Favourites were left behind in favour of iconic British designs and all-out showstopping creations that wereavant garde and made statements far beyond the frou frou gowns of the Oscars. Perhaps it was also the occasion that has merited a certain maturity and grace from its guests – this is why my top picks from the night reflect the flair and fabulosity of Great British Fashion.

{L-R Naomi Campbell pays tribute in an Alexander McQueen gown, Emma Roberts looks fashion forward and age appropriate in a Julien MacDonald dress and Nicholas Kirkwood booties, Lara Stone braves the cold in a classic Calvin Klein dress, sans opaque tights, while Thandie Newton makes a statement in Peter Pilotto}

Fendi Ruched Chiffon Dress

This week we’re loving this Fendi ruched chiffon dress.

There’s nothing better than a spot of Fendi – timeless and luxe, it’s all you need to show off your fashion credentials.  The gathered draping effect will ensure a flattering silhouette on just about every body shape and as it’s a LBD, it’s the perfect blank canvas to build up a fab party look.  How about a glitter nail varnish and a vampish lip?  Or a beautiful beehive and a slick of eyeliner?  Whatever your style – whether you pair you dress with vertiginous heels or tomboy brogues – we’re sure you’ll look party-ready.

As for your bag, may we suggest you add a pop of colour with a sunny yellow clutch bag by Halston?  The contrast of lemon yellow with the shiny black optic will make sure you don’t become just another dress in a crowd.

The Fendi ruched chiffon dress costs £99 and the Halston 70’s envelope clutch is £79, both for two nights.

Cinderella Competition

Remember how we picked the perfect dresses for a night at the ballet last week? Looks like the Fairy Godmother has paid a visit to Girl Meets Dress HQ – we have a pair of tickets for a lucky girl (or guy) to see Frederick Ashton’s Cinderella at the Royal Opera House this holiday season! To enter the competition, simply visit the Girl Meets Dress Facebook page and ‘like’ our competition announcement staus – easy peasy, non? Remember to tell your friends about the competition too, unless you are prepared to be likened to an ugly step sister! After you’ve liked the status? Cross those fingers and wait – and since you’re here already…why not browse our collection of dresses for something enchanting to wear on the night.

Good luck!

Lady In Red

Despite the mocking from my friends that generally ensues when Lady in Red comes up on my playlist, it looks like celebrities have been taking Chris de Burgh seriously this week and swapping the generic LBD (don’t worry, LBD, we still love you) for something a bit more eye catching. From Natalie Portman’s beatiful Lanvin number, to Gwyneth Paltrow in Britain’s own Victoria Beckham’s designs, A-Listers this week have been seeing red, and not just on the carpet under their feet.

Even style crush Alexa Chung is jumping on the crimson band wagon with a skimpy number by one of our favourite designers, Versus. In fact, fancy copying their looks? As well as having a beautiful collection of red dresses at your disposal, we also happen to have a Versus design from the same collection as Alexa’s outfit of choice. Excited, much?

{L-R Safety Pin Lace Dress by Versus, Bow Neck Silk Dress by Stella McCartney, Silk Tie Singlet Dress by Zimmerman}

As well as ticking boxes for celebrity style and all around style savvyness, these dresses are also perfect for that office Christmas party, ticking the festive box with pizazz.
