Swinging Sixties

With Suki Waterhouse, known for her candescent mod look rumoured to be the new face of Burberry the GMD office have been getting into the sixties vibe. Looking towards icons such as Twiggy and Mary Quant, GMD have rounded up our favourite sixties inspired cocktail dresses, prom dresses and ball gowns!

The A-line shift dress is key to securing this look which is why our Anna Sui, Lace Assented Dress is the perfect contender. Classic,  sleek and timeless, dress up with a pair of knee high boots and become a true sixties chick!

Prints were big in the sixties, particularly with the flower power notion making a loud statement. Hire our Alice and Olivia Tabitha Print Dress for a youthful sixties vibe – scattered in multicoloured florals guaranteed to make a striking impression.

Staying with the Hippie vibe, maxi dresses were also a popular choice in the sixties, creating that bohemian look.  Channel this with our Marnay Dress by Acne, with dramatic draping, sheer inserts and a drawstring waist, sure to embrace attention.

The week in dresses

By Carla Challis

The shade: Electric Blue
When the Duchess of Cambridge and Blake Lively are both spotted wearing the same shade of blue, you know it’s a colour you’ve got to get on board with. Flattering to every skin tone under the sun, it’s an edgier alternative to tangerine or neon pink and much more wearable – heck, you can even break the cardinal sin of no black and blue with this nifty shade. For a real moment, team with complimentary dove grey or sherbet peach.

Try these true blue babies for yourself:

The shape: Two for one
It’s not quite your regular BOGOF deal you’ll find in your local supermarket, but it’s close. The smartest girls are using their sartorial style to get two for the price of one with a skirt and top combi. If, like Marion Cottilard you like the look of a pencil skirt and top, this is a much easier way to achieve it as you benefit from the clean lines a dress provides whilst creating the illusion of separate pieces. Or make like Fan Bing Bing and choose an overlay dress for a cool, matching look.

The show: Anne Hathaway
This girl doesn’t let a little thing like a necessary pixie crop (which she apparently cried over when being cut) stop her from giving good dress. On the promo trail for her new movie The Dark Knight, Anne Hathaway has chosen a mix of girly yet contemporary gowns, from the Grecian inspired plunging Prabal Gurung to the stunning sixties shimmer Gucci. Our favourite though, by far, is the cute and cool gingham Stella McCartney cut-out – it complements her crop to the bone.

Choose your favourite Anne and have a go for yourself:
