Featured blogger: Sue from IceTheCake.co.uk gives us her top wedding guest dresses

sue

Sue launched the now multi award-winning IceTheCake.co.uk just over 2 years ago. Initially it was set up to just say ‘Thank You’ to the suppliers who had helped at her Wedding. However, since then this wedding website has grown at a sensational rate, encompassing an extensive wedding directory, stylish blog full of wedding ideas and inspiration, an online shop with quirky handmade products and on Saturday 3rd August, Sue launched her very first boutique in Buckinghamshire. Sue takes us through her top
dresses for weddings this summer.

1. Alice + Olivia – Olympia Embellished Dress £49
Who doesn’t love a bit of sparkle at a wedding? This exquisitely embellished silk wedding guest dress is perfect for a summer celebration. The overall design, with its v-neck, elbow length sleeves and ruched waistline, is flattering and stylish. Team with metallic silver sandals or blush courts for a polished look.

2. ETRO – Paisley Print Dress £69
I really love the graphic print on this wedding guest dress. Summery in design, but also perfect for an autumn wedding. With its pull on style it is easy to wear, but the overall look is chic and requires minimal accessories. Pick your favourite colour from the design and emphasize it with oversized clutch and shoes of your choice.

3. Gorgeous Couture – The Bailey Print Dress £49
My selection wouldn’t be complete without at least one, one shouldered design. The Bailey dress for wedding guests has to be one of my favourite’s, as it creates a beautifully curvaceous silhouette. Even better, although I have personally chosen the print version of this dress, Girl Meets Dress actually stock it in other colours too! You can choose from knee length, Black or Blush and full length Blush or Turquoise. Gorgeous!

4. Project D – Phoebe Pelum Dress £39
Elegant and classy, this wedding guest dress oozes sophistication. I adore the chiffon overlay element of the dress with delicate polka dot detailing. The peplum ruffle design, is great for creating curves and the overall look and colour is perfect for any time of year. Team with silver, gold or white accessories for a classic ensemble or with fushia or orange for a more contemporary look.

5. Diane Von Furstenberg – Belted Lupe Summer Dress £39
My final choice is just too pretty! A delightful mix of ruffles and florals makes this wedding guest dress ultra girlie, but the length and style means it is perfect for all ages. Whether you like heels or prefer flats this wedding guest dress lends itself to all styles of shoes, which makes it versatile for beach weddings with flip flops or kittens to a London Mayfair Hotel and killer heels.

Ball Gowns: Myths and Facts about dressing for your age

Ball gowns are tricky. There are so many different styles and colours that it’s hard to chose. Certain styles can make you look frumpy whilst others can wash you out with their sombre colours. Here, GMD takes you through the top ball gowns to rent for your age.

Teens
Myth: A long gown will make you look like your mum
Truth: Wearing something daring like a long dress will highlight your maturity as a young lady

Maxi dresses have been a staple item in our closets for a while now – only this time we’re revamping them. Prom dresses don’t have to be short, after all, how often do you get to walk around in a lovely long ball gown? Take the opportunity to stand out from your friends! Length will elongate you, giving the illusion of model-high legs, and will turn you from sweet 16 to a beautiful young lady. Bonnie Wright has been known to wear numerous long ball gowns on the red carpet, teaming them with fun accessories. Rent the strapless Ariella Catherine Gown – a beautiful choice, whilst the Gorgeous Couture Ida Dress will show your flirty side with a thigh split. Or sparkle in our Forever Unique Lowri Maxi Dress.

Myth: Bright colours make you look like you’re trying to hold onto your teenage years
Truth: Summer 2013 is all about colour – no matter what your age

When it comes to hiring ball gowns not everyone has to follow the black tie rules. A special event calls for an even more special colour – don’t go safe! The fashion trends are dripping with colour this summer, we’re especially fond of hot pink, cobalt blue and zesty orange. Michelle Williams isn’t afraid to experiment with colour, she often chooses bolder choices when appearing on the red carpet. Ariella’s Elizabeth Gown is flirty and fun and a great choice of our ball gowns to rent. The Nicole Miller Riley Gown in Cobalt will turn heads for all the right reasons whilst the Elliot Claire Yellow Pleated Gown will highlight your figure.

Myth: Women of a certain age should cover up
Truth: Show some skin and unveil your glamorous side.

If we’ve learnt anything over the last few years it’s that boundaries are meant to be pushed. Long gone are the days where women are told to cover up and not to draw attention to themselves. Take Helen Mirren for example – known not only for her incredible talent but for her quirky, and often controversial, style. Only last month Helen wore stripper heels to the premier of Red 2 (she’s also dyed her hair pink and proudly displayed her body in a two-piece bikini on holiday). Our Dynasty Margaery Gown is a vision in pink whilst our Elliot Claire Jewelled Silver Gown mixes up shapes with it’s one shoulder detail. Ariella is always great for gowns and we think the Lena Gown is perfect for showing off your collar bone and shoulders.

1. Ariella Sofia gown – £109

Love the ethereal, floaty quality of this celebrity dress. The split in the leg gives it a sexy vibe along with the “under the bust” cutouts. Lemon is a hard colour to pull off unless you have that sunkissed glow. All in all a perfect summer evening gown…& seen as my holidays are coming up this dress is an inspiration.

2. Alice & Olivia Papina Dress – £49

Such a cute celebrity dress to hire. I love the length, little capped sleeves & love love love the colour. So chic. Hair down or up with red lips to match this beautiful dress.

1. Melissa Odabash Laura – £29

I love how elegant yet sexy this black celebrity dress this. It allows you to show off your legs in a feminine fun way. I would feel confident and pretty in this because of the slightly A line cut it has you can wear it comfortably without worrying about it clinging. The little black dress always wins especially at this affordable price.

2. Gorgeous Couture Jen Maxi Dress – £79

This celebrity maxi dress is just so chic in its simplicity and reminds me of the Tom Ford dress that Gwyneth Paltrow wore to the Oscars. The Swarovski belt adds some subtle glamour to it and I like that it is detachable so you can accessorise as much as or as little as you want to. This blush pink is one of my favourite colours and so pretty for summer.

2013-08-05_1048_0015Ariella Ivy Green Gown – £109
