Silk Strapless Dress by Jasmine Di Milo

Here at GMD we’re addicted to Vogue.  If you’ve been paying attention to the current issue you’ll have noticed that the colour chartreuse is having a bit of a moment.  Somewhere between green and yellow, or as we like to call it, olive gold, this colour will transform the dullest of looks into something spectacular.

That’s why this gorgeous strapless silk dress by Jasmine Di Milo is our Dress of the Week.

It’s case in point – this otherwise unassuming dress with its drape detailing on the bust becomes something more than a simple strapless shift in this yellow-green hue.  Plus, the colour can’t help but make us think of Spring!

The Jasmine Di Milo label epitomises luxury and elegance.  Daughter of Mohammed Al Fayed, Jasmine set up her label in 2003 after graduating from London College of Fashion and DALI at Central Saint Martins.  Her designs have been worn by such major celebrities as Gwyneth Paltrow and Thandie Newton.

We’d pair this otherwise demure little number with a sharp blazer and the studded Zillie clutch from Jimmy Choo to toughen the look up.

The beauty of this little clutch bag is that it can be attached to a larger day bag and taken off for the evening.  In fact, this would make the perfect day-to-night outfit: sharp in the boardroom, vamped up for the evening with a slick of eyeliner.

Silk strapless dress by Jasmine Di Milo is £99 for two nights or £109 for 7 nights.  Jimmy Choo Zillie studded bag is £79 for 2/7 nights with any dress or, if borrowed alone, £89 for 7 nights and £99 for 1 month.

Oscars 2011 Dresses Review

Monday morning, 28th February. You might have guessed what was the number one topic in the office – The Oscars. Our dress-obsessive team was talking about the best and the worst dresses. There were a lot of opinions, but we agreed on most of the dresses.

Cristina Garcia, GMD buyer, picked her favorite and not so favorite dresses.

We loved her comments!

BEST DRESSED

• Natalie Portman in Rodarte

“Must be tough to be tough being pregnant and  having to  dress up for the Oscars but somehow Natalie makes this  look effortless by choosing a colour that compliments her skin tone, a cut that flatters her pregnant figure and minimal accessories that let her natural beauty shine! Pregnant ladies take note.â€

• Michelle Williams in Chanel (and Harry Winston Jewellery)

“Michelle chose the perfect dress to look chic while showing off her fabulous figure! The nude tone and floor length of this Chanel dress make the look right on trend while her understated but highly coveted Harry Winston jewellery glam it up for Oscar night!â€

• Mila Kunis in Ellie Saab Couture

“Of course it helps that Mila Kunis has model genes, but this amazing Ellie Saab Couture dress ups her game in being one of the undoubtedly best dressed at this years Academy Awards. The beautifully crafted dress fits her perfectly and her hair, make-up and accessories are just ideal. The only way to describe her look is red carpet perfection.â€

• Helen Mirren in Vivienne Westwood

“Helen Mirren wore a very flattering Vivienne Westwood dress to the ceremony in order to support the British designer’s opening of a new shop in LA. This type of dress is ultra-flattering on older women who perhaps don’t want to show too much skin (eg flabby arms); a definite Mother-of-the-Bride inspiration!â€

• Gwyneth Paltrow in Calvin Klein Collection

“Gwyneth sure knows how to make a statement on the red carpet. This Calvin Klein dress hugs her slim figure perfectly while being very on-trend (note the maxi-length with a thigh-high slit). Her trademark straight-hair compliments the minimalist/futuristic look while the Louis Vuitton jewellery ads a subtle touch of colour.â€

WORST DRESSED

• Scarlett Johanson in Dolce & Gabanna

“I honestly don’t know what’s worst, the front or the back of this dress! The colour does suit her… but all that lace is somehow very unflattering. Sorry Scarlett, maybe next time.â€

• Melissa Leo in Marc Bouwer

“It was definitely a night of highs and lows for Melissa. The lows being, she wore this unfortunate ensemble together with those strange, ill-fitting shoes that have nothing to do with the (eek!) white and gold textured lace gown. She then said the F-word on public television, which apparently is very embarrassing for the Academy Awards. On the bright side she did win an Oscar for best supporting actress! Our veredict: look in the mirror before leaving no matter how nervous you are.â€

• Penelope Cruz in L’Wren Scott

Penelope looks amazing for just having had a baby; she certainly has that mother glow. Her dress on the other hand… is abysmal in our opinion. It looks like somebody used the leftovers from Christmas wrappings and glued it onto a wine coloured fabric… not the best red carpet look for sure.â€

• Nicole Kidman in Dior

“Although we love Nicole we don’t necessarily love the styling on this look. We feel the shoes have nothing in common with the architectural and embroidered Dior gown (although kudos for trying to incorporate the brights trend into the look). Also, her usually glossy locks have been unfortunately replaced with what seems as post-hat hair, both flattened and frizzed.â€

• Marisa Tomey in Lily et Cie

“Where to start? The fit is ghastly; the top bit is too high on her breasts (this cut is meant to reveal some cleavage), the nipped-in waist squeezes her tummy and makes her look as if she has a beer-belly (not her case but this is what an ill-fitting dress can do to you). Finally, that poofed-up asymmetric tulle bottom-half?? Enough said.â€

What do you think? Do you agree or disagree? What were your favorite dresses?

Keira Tunic Dress by LaDress

With AW11 London Fashion Week behind us, now is the time to be working the SS11 trends.  This cobalt Keira tunic dress by LaDress is a great colour to work into your wardrobe to get ahead on the ‘brights’ trend.  That’s why it’s our Dress of the Week.

If you’re feeling brave you should look to Christopher Kane’s Ss11 collection for inspiration and pair this dress with fuchsia heels or a neon accessory.  The beauty of this blue is that, while it’s highly appropriate for working the SS11 trend for colour, it could easily be dressed down with muted accessories and a leather jacket.  The long sleeves make it perfect for this time of year – it’s fool-proof trans-seasonal dressing.

The sleeve is fabulously slouchy and 60’s-style so why not take the 60’s look one step further with a messy back-combed beehive?

If you don’t fancy a neon clutch, this Wilbur and Gussie Tinker purple silk clutch would work well with this dress as well.  The sapphire and garnet hues will make this look expensive and sleek.

The Keira Tunic dress by LaDress is £69 for 2 nights or £79 for 7 nights.  The Wilbur and Gussie Tinker clutch is £39 for 2/7 nights with any dress, £49 for 7 nights if borrowed alone, or £69 for a month if borrowed alone.

Purple Orchid Dress by Christopher Kane

Spring is just around the corner and yet the weather doesn’t seem to be quite there yet.  It’s only natural to want to break out your SS11 wardrobe with the month of March fast approaching, but you don’t want to look overtly summery when it’s still raining.

Well, none other than London designer darling and 2011 BFC/Vogue Designer Fashion Fund winner Christopher Kane has the answer.  His purple orchid dress is our Dress of the Week.

While florals are nothing new for Spring, this season sees the usual girlie flower turn womanly (see Stella McCartney, Dries Van Noten and Erdem for further proof).  This dress is case in point and this is one of the reasons it’s perfect for right now.

Add to those oversized graphic orchids a black background, long sleeves and a straight silhouette and there’s no reason this dress won’t work right now.  In fact, it seems more suited to London’s grey days than summer sun.

Its casual style is great for the day – just add battered-up converse high tops and a leather jacket – or for night – swap the trainers for heels.  This dress works hard at making you look good.  What’s not to like?

Christopher Kane Purple Orchid dress is £79 for 2 nights or £89 for 7 nights.
