What to Wear: Christening

Christenings, one of those rare occasions that get the whole family together. The last time you saw them you had probably decided that leggings made acceptable trousers and you had that khaki shade to your hair after jumping between blonde and brunette a little too often. The time has come to show them the ‘new you’ and lose those tragic nicknames. GMD has picked a few dresses which are sure to get as many coo’s, oo’s and aww’s as the baby!

As it’s a Christening and not a Wedding you won’t be getting any daggers off the bride if you wear cream. That’s why you should try our By Malene Birger Angulina Dress, the ultimate in demure glamour. With a black lace overlay and metallic thread adding playful sparkle.

If you want to make a colour popping statement and have the family talking for months afterwards,  try our Carven Voluminous Skirt Dress. With a simple silhouette that has a futuristic edge the family will be gathering around you at the font rather than the baby!

If you want something more timeless and tailored hire our Marni Cady Dress. With an a-line shape and soft pleat detailing on the side you could not put a foot wrong. Just maybe don’t get too close to the baby, you can’t have drool ruining the nude silk!

What to Wear: Job Interview

An interview isn’t necessarily a fashion show, but that’s not to say that getting it right doesn’t go unnoticed. Looking good isn’t going to get you the job but it sure will help, showing that you mean business. GMD have picked 3 key dresses which could help you on the way to securing that dream job.

You can never go wrong with a shirt dress which is why we have picked our Carven Knotted Shirt Dress as interview outfit number 1. With the blueberry colour adding a directional twist to a timeless piece of tailoring, interviewers will be sure to take note. Pair with black tights, brogues and a briefcase for a preppy look.

Look number 2 is brought to you by Paper London. The Rayleigh, a shirt dress yet again has a graphic look with contrasting panneling  and pencil fit. As seen on Pippa Middleton, this geometric design will be sure to leave a lasting impression of power and sophistication. Wear with a simple pair of courts for a classic look.

The shade: Electric Blue
When the Duchess of Cambridge and Blake Lively are both spotted wearing the same shade of blue, you know it’s a colour you’ve got to get on board with. Flattering to every skin tone under the sun, it’s an edgier alternative to tangerine or neon pink and much more wearable – heck, you can even break the cardinal sin of no black and blue with this nifty shade. For a real moment, team with complimentary dove grey or sherbet peach.

The shape: Two for one
It’s not quite your regular BOGOF deal you’ll find in your local supermarket, but it’s close. The smartest girls are using their sartorial style to get two for the price of one with a skirt and top combi. If, like Marion Cottilard you like the look of a pencil skirt and top, this is a much easier way to achieve it as you benefit from the clean lines a dress provides whilst creating the illusion of separate pieces. Or make like Fan Bing Bing and choose an overlay dress for a cool, matching look.

The show: Anne Hathaway
This girl doesn’t let a little thing like a necessary pixie crop (which she apparently cried over when being cut) stop her from giving good dress. On the promo trail for her new movie The Dark Knight, Anne Hathaway has chosen a mix of girly yet contemporary gowns, from the Grecian inspired plunging Prabal Gurung to the stunning sixties shimmer Gucci. Our favourite though, by far, is the cute and cool gingham Stella McCartney cut-out – it complements her crop to the bone.

The Week in Dresses

By Carla Challis

Spotlight on: Blake Lively
This was the week she wowed. The 24-year-old went from old school Hollywood to demure to honeyed beach babe in the flick of her golden mane. On the promo trail for her new movie Savages, she started the week in an absolutely jaw-droppingly, second skin sex siren worthy Zuhair Murad couture gown, ramped up with Veronica Lake curls and striking red lips. Her next appearance may have seemed much more conservative but the ivory Marchesa gown she chose for a taping of the David Letterman Show was anything but – the cape detail gives it an unexpected and hot right now edge. Note how she matched her Lorraine Schwartz jewellery to her crystal encrusted Louboutins. And she showed us all just why Gucci chose her as the face of their fragrance Premiere in a buttercup yellow custom made gown from the Italian powerhouse, topped off with turqouise drop earrings and a stack of bracelets. For this girl, it’s the details that count.

Look Lively with these Blake-worthy gowns…

Spotlight on: Elizabeth Banks
Form fitting seems to be the buzz word for actress Elizabeth Banks this week, who’s been spotted out and about in a plethora of fun and flirty dresses. Colour is a big deal for Elizabeth and she isn’t afraid to experiment – her House of Holland zig-zag printed dress errs on the right side of the rainbow whilst her floral Jill Stuart tea dress uses contemporary colours to reinvent a classic shape. But just as we think we’ve got her signature style in hand, she surprised us all with a nude and gold embellished Elie Saab halterneck dress. Luckily one thing we can bank on with Elizabeth is that colour matching shoes; imagine her shoe closet…

Follow Elizabeth’s lead with these fancy frocks…

Spotlight on: Emma Stone
Would her alter-ego Gwen Stacey approve? The Spiderman 4 star has been showcasing her chameleon-esque red carpet style on the promo trail for the forthcoming epic. Debuting her new blonde locks, Emma Stone has become one of the most unexpected and exciting stars to watch when it comes to fashion; she’s cute and covered up in Chanel one minute, goth in Gucci the next. But it’s her played down off-duty looks that really show her true style credentials – one look at the electric blue hue of that knotted Carven dress and you’ll be caught in her wonder web too.

Try some of Emma’s looks for yourself…
