Cinderella Enchanted

This winter, the Royal Ballet are performing Cinderella at the Royal Opera House. Their performances began this week, and will culminate in a New Years Eve spectacular on the 31st of December. A night at the ballet, like a night at the opera, exudes culture and sophistication, but with prices starting at £6, the ballet is anyone’s game. Cinderella, the story of a young girl transformed from rags to riches with the help of a fairy godmother and a pair of beautiful glass slippers, is a little girl’s dream – and even all grown up, you are certainly entitled to wish for a handsome prince, and a ballgown that doesn’t disintegrate at the stroke of midnight.

GMD (that’s God Mother of Dresses from now on) has the perfect hand-picked dresses for you to enjoy your ownenchanted evening at the ballet. So for one night only, make like Cinderella and pick the dress of your dreams from our extensive collection of stunning dresses – and we promise you don’t have to be home by midnight!

Dress Code Guide to social glamourings!

With the party and holiday season upon us navigating through all the different dress styles and terminology can be confusing. So here’s the Girl Meets Dress guide to social glamourings!

WHITE TIE

The most formal of all the occasions is the White Tie, traditionally worn after dark or five pm, which ever one comes first. Dressing for this type of event requires a full length dress, no exceptions! I especially love this coral red jersey dress by Issa , favourite designer of Kate Middleton. What is great about this dress is that it’s both sexy and elegant at the same time. If bold colours aren’t your thing this PPQ dress is just as fantastic in classic black. Another stunning choice is this asymmetrical gown by Marchesa.

BLACK TIE

For a more semi-formal event, known as Black Tie anything from a full length to a cocktail dress is perfectly acceptable and appropriate. With it being less traditional than White Tie you can be a bit fashion forward or even daring, if you wish. For the brave I suggest you try this gorgeous orange dress by Stella McCartney. However if you want to play it safe you can never go wrong with a LBD (little black dress) and Alexander Wang has the perfect one.  YSL offer an alternative contrasting choice with this adorable bow dress.

SMART CASUAL

Last but not least you have Smart Casual. It’s a modern term and look that isn’t steeped in tradition like the others and therefore harder to define. For me the key is in the title, it’s a combination of both smart with casual. This look can vary from a wrap dress to shirt dress to a mini dress. Avoid a ball or cocktail gown however a full length dress in a more casual fabric is a great combination. Here are some of my personal picks for the perfect Smart Casual look.

Royal Rush

As the UK celebrates the engagement of Prince William and Kate Middleton, and hopes for a bank holiday weekend to be added in light of the royal wedding of the millenium (sorry Charles and Camilla), everyone is asking ‘have you seen Kate’s ring??’ But it seems that more than a few beady eyed fashionistas have been asking ‘have you seen Kate’s dress??’ Kate looked glowing in a blue, wrap dress by designer label Issa, but if you’re keen to get your hands on it, I’m afraid you’re too late. Having sold out on the Matches website and Harvey Nichols, amongst others, it’s going to be no mean feat to find that dress.

Issa is one of Kate’s go-to designers, having worn the Brazilian label on more than a few occassions. Luckily for you, Issa is one of our favourites too – why not try this one? But if you’re still hankering after that royal blue, these equally stunning dresses are sure to make you feel every inch the princess.

Hello, Upper East Siders

After an inspiring trip to the Big Apple this month, and a somewhat desperate jealousy of the dresses donned by the cast of one of my favourite television programmes du jour, I thought it would be fitting to delve into the world of the Gossip Girl cast and indulge in some serious wardrobe envy.

Blair Waldorf is the quintissential Upper East Sider, with an impeccable turn out and clothes that are architecturally interesting, yet demure, and guaranteed to cost more than a Londoner’s monthly rent. Hers is the most exclusive of the bunch, with little high street mix and matching, but here are my hand-picked favourites that even Blair Waldorf would be excited to find in her wardrobe.

{L-R Leighton Meester as Blair Waldorf, Wool Jackie Dress by LaDress, Circle Dress by Roland Mouret, Metallic Jacquard Dress by Proenza Schouler, Fantasy Frill Dress by Marc Jacobs}

GMD’s stunning collection of dresses has something to suit every one of Blair’s moods, in her favourite designer choices, so if you feel like taking tea at the Ritz and acting as Queen Bee for the day, don’t hesitate – why not try all four?

Serena van der Woodsen’s style choices are all about fun and seduction – and anything that serves as an excuse to get those mile-long legs out! Despite her best friend Blair’s efforts to remain conservative and put together, Serena is a party girl at heart, and these dresses would be perfect for the part.

Why so sad, S? Is it because Girl Meets Dress customers can now access your favourite designers pieces and wear to their hearts content? We thought so.

And just in case you don’t fit into the Upper East Siders bracket, perhaps some inspiration from Brooklyn hipster Vanessa Abrams might be more up your street. Vanessa’s style is eclectic and full of colour – accesorise these pieces with some chunky bangles, a colourful tote bag, and maybe even a beanie hat, if the mood so takes you!

Why not make like the Gossip Girls and update your wardrobe for a night with these exciting pieces – get together with your girlfriends, pick a character and head out for some cocktails and a cheeky gossip.

xoxo.
